Ukraine Offers Partial Ceasefire Plan to US Amidst Shifting Geopolitical Tides

In a bid to regain crucial support from the United States, Ukraine is set to present a proposal for a partial ceasefire with Russia during critical talks in Saudi Arabia. Hobnob News reports that this initiative comes amidst escalating tensions and a noticeable shift in US policy, which now demands concessions from Kyiv to end the protracted three-year conflict.

The talks, which will be the most high-level since a contentious White House visit last month, are being held as Russia intensifies its attacks on Ukraine, and Kyiv responds with its own strikes, including a recent drone attack on Moscow. This meeting is pivotal, particularly after the US suspended military aid, intelligence sharing, and access to satellite imagery in an attempt to push Ukraine towards negotiations.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, accompanied by National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, has expressed hope for a positive outcome from Tuesday’s discussions, stating, “Hopefully, we’ll have a good meeting and good news to report.” Rubio also clarified that intelligence for defensive operations remains unaffected.

During the previous White House meeting, President Zelensky did not sign an agreement, demanded by the current US administration, that would grant the US access to Ukraine’s mineral wealth in exchange for past weapons supplies. While Zelensky remains open to signing, Rubio indicated that this would not be the primary focus of the Saudi Arabia talks.

In recent developments, Russia has increased its attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure and regained control of villages in the Kursk region. On the eve of the talks, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported a “massive” drone attack on the Russian capital, resulting in casualties.

Faced with mounting pressure from Washington, Ukraine is now proposing a limited ceasefire, particularly in the air and sea. “We do have a proposal for a ceasefire in the sky and ceasefire at sea,” a Ukrainian official stated, emphasizing that these options are easier to implement and monitor.

Rubio has signaled that the US administration would likely view such a proposal favorably, stating, “I’m not saying that alone is enough, but it’s the kind of concession you would need to see in order to end the conflict.” He also acknowledged the challenges faced by both sides in achieving complete victory.

In a separate meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Zelensky discussed Ukraine’s conditions for a permanent peace deal, including the release of prisoners and the return of children allegedly abducted by Moscow. The two leaders also explored potential security guarantees for Ukraine.

Rubio clarified that the Saudi Arabia talks would not involve finalizing a peace agreement, but he would relay the Ukrainian proposals to Russia. He also highlighted recent meetings between US and Russian officials in Saudi Arabia, signifying a resumption of high-level contacts.

The US policy shift has garnered attention and concern from allies. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock expressed concern about the developments, and French senator Claude Malhuret criticized what he perceives as a strategic mistake in US policy.

As the talks unfold in Saudi Arabia, the world is watching closely, anticipating a potential shift in the trajectory of the conflict. Hobnob News will continue to provide updates on this critical situation.
