Governor Seyi Makinde has formally approved the appointment of Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo. This decision follows extensive consultations and divinations by the Oyomesi, the traditional council responsible for selecting a successor.
“The recommendation of Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade by the Oyomesi has been approved by Governor Makinde after thorough deliberations,” said Prince Dotun Oyelade, Oyo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, in a statement released today.
Hon. Ademola Ojo, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, also confirmed the announcement, describing it as a significant resolution to the disputes that arose after the passing of Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III on April 22, 2022. “This marks the end of the socio-political and legal contentions that followed the demise of His Imperial Majesty,” Hon. Ojo stated.
He further called on the people of Oyo State to embrace this momentous occasion with unity and support for the new monarch. “We urge all citizens to join hands with the government in celebrating this historic moment and extend their cooperation to the new Alaafin of Oyo,” Hon. Ojo added.
The state government expressed optimism about the new reign, with Prince Oyelade praying for peace, prosperity, and unity under Prince Owoade’s leadership. “May his tenure usher in a new era of harmony and progress for the revered Oyo Kingdom,” the statement concluded.
The announcement brings closure to a significant chapter in Oyo’s history and sets the stage for a new beginning under the leadership of the newly appointed Alaafin.
