Gunmen Abduct Former Daily Trust Editor’s Relatives, Demand N50m Ransom

Tragedy struck in Kogi State on Thursday afternoon as gunmen abducted three relatives of Ahmed Ajobe, a former Editor of Daily Trust. The victims, including Ajobe’s younger sister, Halimtu-Sadiya Tahir, and two others, were kidnapped while returning from a market in Awo, Ankpa Local Government Area.

The abduction occurred along the dilapidated Ankpa-Adoka-Makurdi road, a route notorious for criminal activities. The victims were reportedly on a shopping trip to prepare for the seven-day prayers following the recent death of Ajobe’s mother, Malama Aishetu Tahir, who passed away on Sunday after a prolonged illness.

A family friend, speaking anonymously, disclosed that the kidnappers contacted the family on Friday afternoon, demanding a ransom of N50 million. “As of now, no amount has been paid, and negotiations are ongoing. The victims remain in captivity,” the source revealed.

Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, William Aya, confirmed the incident, stating that the Divisional Police Officer and tactical teams have been deployed to ensure the victims’ rescue. Commissioner of Police, Bethrand Onuoha, has also vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Efforts are currently underway to secure the safe release of the victims, as the family and law enforcement grapple with the dire situation.
