Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of using a missile with intercontinental ballistic capabilities in its latest attack on Ukraine. In a post on his X account, Zelenskyy stated that Russia’s actions reveal its “disdain for dignity, freedom, and human life itself” and are driven by “fear” of Ukraine’s desire for independence.
The attack, which targeted Ukraine’s central-eastern city of Dnipro, marks the first time Russia has deployed an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in the 33-month war. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted six Kh-101 cruise missiles during the same attack.
Zelenskyy emphasized that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact capacity of the missiles used by Russia. However, he noted that the missile’s speed and altitude suggest intercontinental ballistic capabilities.
This escalation comes amid rising tensions between Ukraine and Russia, particularly after the United States approved Ukraine’s use of long-range missiles inside Russia.
The international community, including UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk, has condemned Russia’s actions, emphasizing the need to protect civilians and uphold international humanitarian law.
