Interior Minister Tunji-Ojo Addresses Allegations of Preferential Treatment for Bobrisky in Prison

Minister of Interior Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo recently commented on allegations involving the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) and cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky. Tunji-Ojo stated he would not protect the agency’s reputation if ethical misconduct is involved. He emphasized that the issue primarily concerns reputation management and ethics within paramilitary organizations under his purview.

The minister warned that he would not shield any agency under his ministry if it fails to perform its duties correctly. A few days prior, a government panel reported no evidence proving Bobrisky avoided his six-month prison sentence, although it acknowledged that he received certain privileges while in custody. The panel described these privileges as “unethical and unacceptable.”

Speaking at a Performance Contract Signing Retreat, Tunji-Ojo called on paramilitary agencies to enhance internal security efforts to support national growth. The event, themed “United Front for a Secure Nation and Future,” included participation from agencies like the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), and the Federal Fire Service (FSS).

The minister expressed that the NCoS should be recognized as a transformative body focused on inmate rehabilitation and human rights. According to him, maintaining a reformative approach is crucial for respecting citizens’ dignity.

He highlighted the importance of internal security, stating, “The critical role that the Federal Ministry of Interior has to play in our internal security is very key. Every little effort from each and every one of you is important because without security you can’t talk about investment, without security you can’t talk about tourism and industrialization. Without security, you can’t talk about stabilization of the capital or money market or even employment. So it means that there is no productivity without security.”
