The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the release of all protesters arrested during the #EndSars commemoration at the Lekki Toll Gate. According to the Command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olanrewaju Ishola, personally oversaw the release process.
Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong also verified the release, stating that seized items were returned to the protesters. The 22 activists were arrested while commemorating the fourth anniversary of the Lekki massacre.
The protesters, who gathered to demand implementation of judicial panel reports, were deemed to have participated in an “illegal protest” due to lack of police clearance.
However, the protesters alleged police brutality during the memorial procession. International rights group Amnesty International condemned the arrests and violent attacks, calling them “unacceptable.”
