Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier Match Cancelled Amid Controversy

The highly-anticipated Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 qualifier match between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Libya has been cancelled, according to a statement released by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Tuesday ¹. The cancellation comes after Nigeria boycotted the fixture, citing inhumane treatment and safety concerns following their traumatic experience in Libya.

The Super Eagles were stranded at Al Abraq Airport for over 13 hours on Sunday, prompting the team to withdraw from the match. The Nigerian Football Federation accused the Libyan authorities of abandoning them, leaving the team without food or water for an extended period.

In response to the controversy, CAF launched an investigation into the incident on Monday, after the Libya Football Federation alleged sabotage and threatened legal action against Nigeria ¹. However, the Libyan FA denied any wrongdoing, claiming that the Nigerian team failed to cooperate in organizing the match.

The cancelled match was scheduled to take place on Tuesday at the Martyrs of Benina Stadium in Benghazi, Libya ². With the cancellation, the fate of the qualifier remains uncertain, and fans are left wondering if the match will be rescheduled or forfeited.
