Edo State Education Ministry Under Fire: Calls for Proactive Measures to Prevent Looting

A alarming situation is unfolding in Edo State, Nigeria, as concerns mount about potential looting in the Education Ministry. The outgoing Commissioner of Education, Hon. Joan Oviawe, has been accused of orchestrating a systematic looting scheme, leveraging her position to exploit funds meant for students’ uniforms and sports wear.

Last session, students were required to pay for new uniforms, but Oviawe allegedly mandated school principals to divert approximately 20 million naira into a specific account. This decision resulted in many students, particularly new intakes, being denied uniforms throughout the session.

In a recent development, an incomprehensible circular was issued to all principals, directing them to collect money from students and deposit it into a central account. This raises concerns about the payment of last year’s uniforms, which principals were instructed to cover using session school fees. The tailors who provided uniforms on loan may not receive refunds, perpetuating debt and depleting the state treasury.

The APC Chairman, Emperor Jarrett Tenebe, and the Governor and Deputy elect must also be informed to prevent further exploitation. Hon. Joan Oviawe’s actions warrant close scrutiny to prevent further damage to the Education Ministry and the state’s finances ¹.
