Kano Street Beggars Plead for End to Protests, Citing Hunger and Hardship

Street beggars in Kano are calling on protest organizers to end the ongoing demonstrations, citing extreme hunger and hardship. The beggars, who rely on daily alms to feed their families, say the protests have prevented them from earning a living.

Baba Haliru, a 70-year-old beggar, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that his household of 14 has gone without food for two days in the last four days, except for water. He appealed to protest organizers to negotiate with the government to end the protests.

Other beggars echoed Haliru’s sentiments, calling for an end to the protests and the total lifting of the curfew. Malama Mario Kabiru said, “We have run out of foodstuffs and can’t go out to buy more. We don’t have money, and the situation is unbearable.”

Malam Isa Musa appealed to the government to introduce measures to support elderly individuals with no support, saying, “We are begging because we have no one to support us. Since the curfew was introduced, we have not eaten anything in the last three days with our families. We can’t continue like this; kindly let the protests stop.”
