Despite the escalating insecurity in Nigeria, the Armed Forces of Nigeria has deployed 197 personnel to The Gambia for a peacekeeping mission. The troops, who underwent Pre-Deployment Training at the Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Centre in Jaji, Kaduna State, will serve under the Economic Community of West African States Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG).
According to Maj-Gen. Boniface Sinjen, Chief of Operations Nigerian Army, the deployment demonstrates the Armed Forces’ commitment to international peace and security. The training equipped the troops with tactical skills and knowledge for peace support operations, including the protection of civilians.
This development comes as Nigeria grapples with rising cases of banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping, raising questions about the country’s ability to prioritize its own security challenges while contributing to regional peacekeeping efforts.
