NANS Rejects Single Term Bill for President, Governors, Calls it “Anti-Democratic

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has vehemently rejected a bill proposing a single term of six years for the President and state governors, describing it as “anti-democratic” and an attempt to stifle citizens’ choices.

The bill, sponsored by 35 members of the House of Representatives, aims to reduce the cost of governance and promote rotation of the presidency among the six geopolitical zones. However, NANS has called on Nigerians, pro-democracy groups, organized labor, and trade unions to mobilize against the bill, arguing that it undermines democratic principles and limits the rights of citizens to choose their leaders.

In a statement, NANS President, Comrade Umar Faruk, stated that the bill is a “threat to democracy and the future of Nigerian students” and urged lawmakers to prioritize bills that promote youth empowerment, education, and good governance instead. The student body’s rejection of the bill adds to the growing criticism of the proposal, which has sparked a national debate on the future of Nigeria’s democracy.
