The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has accused state governors of acting in bad faith in the ongoing minimum wage negotiations. The NLC expressed dismay over the governors’ claim that paying N60,000 monthly as minimum wage would be unsustainable.
The governors, under the Nigeria Governors Forum, rejected the proposed N60,000 minimum wage on Friday, sparking outrage from the labor union. The NLC argues that the governors’ stance is a breach of trust and a betrayal of the agreement reached with the organized labor.
The NLC president, Joe Ajaero, stated that the congress would not back down on its demand for a living wage for Nigerian workers, stressing that the N60,000 minimum wage is non-negotiable. The labor union vowed to mobilize workers for a nationwide strike if the governors fail to reconsider their position.
The minimum wage dispute has been ongoing since 2020, with the NLC demanding a new minimum wage to reflect the country’s current economic reality. The stalemate has raised concerns about the welfare of Nigerian workers and the potential impact on the economy.
