Preparations in High Gear for Start of Production at Dangote Refinery

The Dangote Refinery, Nigeria’s petrochemical company, is gearing up for the start of production as it recently received its fourth crude shipment of one million barrels of bonny light crude. This shipment was supplied by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL). The refinery is now anticipating its fifth crude shipment in the near future.

In a statement released on Monday, Dangote Refinery announced that the one million barrels of crude received marked the fourth consignment out of the six million barrels expected by the world’s largest single-train refinery. It should be noted that the refinery had already received three million barrels of crude prior to this.

Mr. Akin Omole, the Managing Director of Dangote Ports Operations, revealed that the refinery is expected to receive a total of four million crude shipments before the end of 2023. The remaining two million will be delivered by early January 2024. This supply of crude will ensure that the refinery is well-prepared to commence operations.

Once all six million barrels of crude are delivered, the refinery will be able to initiate its operations. It will commence the production of diesel, aviation fuel, and LPG, before progressing to the production of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol).

This latest development is expected to play a crucial role in alleviating the fuel supply challenges faced by Nigeria and other West African countries. The Dangote Refinery is designed to process 100% Nigerian crude, while also offering the flexibility to process other crudes. With a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, the refinery can process various African crude grades, Middle Eastern Arab Light, US Light tight oil, and crude from other countries.

As the Dangote Refinery prepares to commence production, it brings hope for an improved fuel supply situation in Nigeria and the region as a whole. The project’s progress is an important milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to enhance its refining capabilities and reduce dependence on fuel imports.
