Deontay Wilder Contemplating Retirement Following Loss to Joseph Parker

In a surprising turn of events, former world champion Deontay Wilder may be considering hanging up his gloves following his loss to Joseph Parker on Saturday. The defeat was seen as an upset, but it was undoubtedly a consequence of Wilder’s lengthy absence from the ring.

Parker, who emerged victorious with a unanimous points decision of 118-111, 118-110, 120-108, showcased his dominance in the ring. The New Zealand native, with a record of 34-3 and 23 knockouts, credited his success to his recent sparring sessions with current WBC champion Tyson Fury.

Wilder, known for his knockout power, engaged in three intense bouts with Fury, drawing the first and losing the subsequent two. However, his prolonged period of inactivity seemed to work against him as Parker outperformed him in landing precise punches and delivering powerful roundhouse rights.

Acknowledging Parker’s skillful tactics, Wilder, now with a record of 43-3, one draw, and 42 knockouts, said, “Well done Joseph, he did a great job avoiding my punches. We move on to the next thing… We make no excuses. We’ll be back for sure. We have a little bit more left.”

Despite his determination to return to the ring, Wilder hinted at the possibility of retirement. He noted, “I’ve done a great job with managing my money and investing. I’m a happy fighter. I’ll be back soon, and if not, it’s been a pleasure.”

Wilder’s decision to potentially end his professional boxing career has left fans and pundits shocked. However, it is not entirely surprising due to the toll that the sport takes on athletes over time. Only time will tell if this is truly the end for the celebrated puncher or if he will make a comeback after reevaluating his options.
