In response to the recent arrest of 69 suspected internet fraudsters by operatives of the Ibadan zonal command in Ile-Ife, Osun state, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially declared a ban on nighttime sting operations. This directive was disclosed by Dele Oyewale, the Head of Media & Publicity at the EFCC, in a statement released on November 1, 2023.
The controversial arrests of these individuals, which caught nationwide attention, led to a public outcry, with the hashtag #FreeOAUStudents trending on social media platforms. Acknowledging this outrage, the EFCC has taken decisive action to prevent further incidents that may undermine its reputation and mandate.
The statement revealed that the ban on nighttime sting operations was communicated by the Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede. The decision was made to address the concerns raised regarding the recent arrest in Ile-Ife and its impact on innocent individuals.
