The Benue State Police Command has recorded a significant breakthrough in its sustained campaign against armed banditry and terrorism with the arrest of a suspected arms supplier and the recovery of 115 rounds of live 7.62mm ammunition in Guma Local Government Area of the state.
The arrest was disclosed in a press statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Orchia Peter Aondongu, who said the operation was carried out by operatives attached to the Guma Division during a routine stop-and-search exercise on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.
According to the statement, police officers intercepted two men riding on a motorcycle during the operation. However, upon sighting the security personnel, one of the occupants reportedly jumped off the motorcycle and fled into a nearby bush, evading arrest.
The second occupant, identified as 20-year-old Joro Jakata, a native of Awe Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, was apprehended at the scene. A search conducted on the suspect led to the recovery of 115 rounds of live 7.62mm ammunition concealed in his possession.
The police confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Makurdi for a comprehensive investigation.
The Command added that efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing accomplice and uncover the source as well as the intended destination of the recovered ammunition.
Reacting to the successful operation, the Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, CP Cletus C.N. Nwadiogbu, commended the vigilance, professionalism, and swift response of the officers involved, describing the arrest as a major step in the Command’s determination to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms and dismantle criminal networks operating within the state.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Benue State Police Command to ensuring the safety of lives and property by intensifying efforts against criminal elements and those supplying weapons to armed groups.
The Commissioner also appealed to members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, movements, or activities to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency lines. He assured residents that all credible information would be treated with utmost confidentiality and acted upon without delay as part of the Command’s ongoing efforts to maintain peace and security across Benue State.
