Suspected “repentant” bandits on Monday launched a deadly attack on farmers in Layin Danauta village, located in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State, killing several people and abducting nearly 20 others.
A local source told SaharaReporters that the assault occurred around 11 a.m., sparking outrage among residents of Birnin Gwari. In response, angry youths reportedly staged a protest and drove herders and other Fulani residents from the town.
The source said tensions rose sharply and threatened to degenerate into widespread unrest before security personnel intervened to restore order. Traditional rulers and community leaders also played a key role in calming the situation and preventing further violence.
Following the attack, many herders and Fulani travellers reportedly fled the area over fears of retaliatory attacks. As of late Monday night, six bodies had been recovered from the scene, while search efforts continued for other victims.
Community members fear the number of casualties may increase as more information emerges. Authorities have yet to officially confirm the exact figures for those killed, injured, or kidnapped.
The latest incident comes days after residents of Birnin Gwari protested against the government’s handling of individuals described as “repentant” bandits, expressing concerns over continued insecurity in the area.
