The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has declared Peter Obi as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election following the conclusion of the party’s primary election conducted across the country.

The announcement was made at the party’s Special National Convention held in Abuja on Saturday, where delegates gathered to formally ratify the outcome of the primary process.

Earlier, Obi arrived at the convention venue alongside the National Chairman of the NDC, Seriake Dickson, and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, amid cheers from party supporters and delegates.

The convention marked a significant milestone for the opposition party as it seeks to position itself as a major contender ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

According to party officials, the primary election was conducted nationwide and culminated in Obi’s emergence as the party’s flag bearer.

Nova News reports that Obi and Kwankwaso recently joined the NDC after leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing internal divisions and ongoing court cases within the party.

Their defection was widely seen as a major boost for the NDC, bringing together two influential political figures with substantial support bases across different regions of the country.

Addressing delegates at the convention, party leaders expressed confidence that the emergence of Obi as the party’s candidate would strengthen its chances in the 2027 election and provide Nigerians with an alternative political platform.

The NDC said it would now begin preparations for the general election, including consultations with stakeholders and the rollout of its campaign strategy ahead of the presidential contest.
