The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Abia State has criticised Governor Alex Otti over the decision to name the newly constructed Umuahia Bus Terminal after Professor Nnenna Otti.
The opposition party described the move as inappropriate and politically motivated, insisting that public infrastructure should not be used to reward individuals perceived to have political affiliations.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the APC accused the state government of attempting to politicise public projects and create unnecessary controversy around the bus terminal project.
The party argued that while Prof. Nnenna Otti may have contributed to the democratic process in the country, naming a major public facility after her was not justified and failed to reflect the wishes of many residents of the state.
According to the APC, the governor should have considered names of notable Abia leaders and personalities who made significant contributions to the development of the state over the years.
The party further alleged that the naming of the terminal could deepen political divisions in the state and distract from the real issues affecting residents, including economic challenges and infrastructure needs.
APC called on Governor Alex Otti to reverse the decision and engage wider consultations before naming major public projects.
However, supporters of the state government have defended the governor’s action, saying Prof. Nnenna Otti played a crucial role in strengthening electoral integrity and deserved recognition for her contributions to democracy.
As of the time of filing this report, the Abia State Government had not issued an official response to the APC’s criticism.
