Former Rivers State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Tonye Cole, has withdrawn from the party’s governorship primary election.
Cole announced his withdrawal in a statement issued on Wednesday, saying the decision was taken in the overriding interest of peace, reconciliation and the supremacy of the party after extensive consultations.
Describing himself as a committed democrat and advocate of strong institutions, the APC chieftain pledged his full support and cooperation to whoever emerges as the party’s candidate at the conclusion of the primaries.
He also expressed appreciation to his supporters, including party faithful, women groups, youths, elders and other residents of Rivers State who stood by him throughout the process.
Cole urged his supporters to remain calm, peaceful and fully cooperate with the leadership of the party.
“I have taken the decision, in the overriding interest of party unity, peace, and collective progress, to respect the supremacy of the party and withdraw from the forthcoming primaries,” he said.
“This decision was not made lightly. It is the product of deep reflection, patriotism, and an unwavering commitment to the stability, growth, and success of our great party and our beloved state,” he added.
The former governorship candidate further called on party members to unite ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Let us unite and work together to secure victory for our President, our party, and all APC candidates in the 2027 general elections,” Cole stated.
