A man identified as the personal driver of an Anglican Bishop in Delta State, simply identified as Bishop Chinedu, has been arrested for allegedly conspiring with kidnappers to kill his employer.
The suspect was apprehended alongside an alleged accomplice and brought to the headquarters of the Anambra State Police Command, where journalists gathered as the suspects were driven into the premises.
Although full details surrounding the incident remain unclear, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, confirmed the arrest and said investigations were still ongoing.
According to the police commissioner, more information would be made public after investigators conclude their findings.
“Don’t mind, details will be revealed to you soon after we conclude our investigations, as they have just been arrested,” Orutugu told journalists.
However, it was gathered that the principal suspect, who served as the private driver to the bishop, allegedly collaborated with kidnappers in a plot to dispossess the cleric of his Toyota Land Cruiser SUV.
Sources said the operation reportedly went wrong, leading to the killing of the bishop, while the vehicle was stolen by the suspects.
Speaking further, Orutugu disclosed that the suspects later moved the stolen vehicle to Anambra State in an attempt to sell it.
“They brought the vehicle into Anambra to sell it, and the man you see with him was the one who wanted to buy the vehicle, but in the process, they were arrested,” the police commissioner added.
Police operatives prevented journalists from speaking directly with the suspects, insisting that investigations into the matter were still in progress.
