Hamzat, APC Leaders Hold Strategic Talks With Gbajabiamila Over Lagos 2027 Governorship

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, alongside key leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), met on Sunday with Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, in what appears to be early consultations ahead of the 2027 Lagos governorship election.

The meeting had in attendance several prominent party figures, including the Secretary of the Governors’ Advisory Council, Muti Are; Senator Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon; Bode Oyedele; Senator Musiliu Obanikoro; Adekunle Olayinka; and the Chairman of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, Hakeem Shittu, among others.

Speaking during the engagement, Obanikoro said the delegation visited to seek Gbajabiamila’s backing for Hamzat’s governorship ambition, noting that the deputy governor is deeply rooted in Lagos politics and would need strong party support to secure the ticket.

Hamzat, in his remarks, said the visit was also for guidance and consultation, stressing that he intended to draw from Gbajabiamila’s experience to better position himself for the task ahead. He reaffirmed confidence in the APC, describing it as a well-structured party capable of sustaining both state and national leadership.

He also emphasised the need to maintain what he described as the economic progress under President Bola Tinubu, adding that careful selection of the party’s governorship candidate would be crucial to sustaining governance continuity in Lagos.

“We discussed the direction of our state and the work required to move it forward. It remains our shared responsibility to strengthen Lagos and continue delivering better outcomes for our people. I am focused and clear about the work ahead,” Hamzat said in a post on X.

Gbajabiamila, in response, expressed support for Hamzat’s political aspiration, noting that he would have backing from key stakeholders, including support from Surulere residents. He also affirmed that if a primary election becomes necessary, the party would conduct it in line with the Electoral Act.
