Tension has enveloped Akombo community in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State following an alleged attack by suspected herders who reportedly set a classroom block ablaze and destroyed stored agricultural produce.
The incident occurred on the evening of April 8, 2026, at L.G.E.A Primary School, Akombo, located near Anyiin. According to residents, the fire severely damaged part of the school infrastructure, while seed yams stored within the premises were consumed in the inferno.
Eyewitnesses said the attack was accompanied by sporadic gunshots, which triggered panic across the community and forced many residents to flee their homes amid fears of a broader assault.
The destruction has heightened anxiety among locals in the agrarian settlement, where farmers have long decried recurring insecurity and limited access to farmlands due to suspected attacks in neighboring communities.
With the planting season fast approaching, many residents expressed concern over their safety, noting that the latest incident has further discouraged them from returning to their farms. They have called on security agencies to increase their presence in the area to restore confidence and prevent further violence.
Reacting to the development, the Media Coordinator of AYBG, Hulega Keghter Kenneth, expressed relief that no lives were lost despite the scale of destruction.
“We thank God that no life was lost, but there is growing uncertainty about returning to our farms in the affected areas,” he said.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities were yet to release an official statement on the incident, even as residents continued to appeal for urgent intervention to protect lives, educational facilities, and farmlands in the community.
