Protests in Eastern Cape Province have spiralled into violence following outrage over the coronation of an Igbo traditional ruler, with demonstrators torching vehicles and looting shops linked to foreign nationals.
The unrest, which began as a protest against the controversial installation, intensified as angry residents took to the streets demanding the deportation of Nigerians associated with the event. Protesters warned of possible escalation if authorities failed to act.
The demonstrations—reportedly led by members of ActionSA, alongside traditional leaders and community groups—reflect deep resentment over what participants described as a violation of local sovereignty, constitutional norms, and established traditional leadership systems.
Violence broke out in KuGompo City, where protesters set multiple vehicles and buildings on fire, allegedly targeting properties owned by foreign nationals. As police intervened to disperse the crowds, demonstrators reportedly moved to other locations, continuing the unrest.
Eyewitness reports indicate that shops were looted, including a local butchery where meat products were taken. The situation further deteriorated when an individual was reportedly stabbed, allegedly during a confrontation involving Ethiopian business owners. At least two people were taken to hospital for treatment.
The incident has reignited long-standing tensions in South Africa over immigration, economic rivalry, and the presence of foreign nationals in local communities.
