Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has dissolved his Executive Council, according to a statement issued Thursday by his Chief Press Secretary, Onwuka Nzeshi. All commissioners and special advisers were directed to hand over to permanent secretaries or the most senior officers in their ministries immediately. The governor thanked outgoing members for their service and wished them well.
The move comes two days after Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike confirmed ongoing reconciliation efforts to resolve the state’s political crisis. President Bola Tinubu reportedly met with key Rivers political actors, including Fubara and his predecessor, in an attempt to ease tensions stemming from a power struggle in the state. Other Rivers leaders were also present at the closed-door meeting in the Presidential Villa.
The intervention coincides with the third impeachment attempt against Fubara by lawmakers loyal to Wike, currently subject to litigation. Wike noted after inspecting projects in Abuja that the meeting, held February 9, was instigated by President Tinubu to broker peace between the governor and the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Wike expressed hope that the president’s efforts would bring an end to the discord, urging both the assembly and the governor to comply. Following the Villa meeting, Fubara reportedly accompanied Wike to his residence in Guzape, Abuja, seen as a potential sign of eased tensions. However, it remains uncertain whether pro-Wike lawmakers will withdraw the impeachment notice or if a lasting truce will be achieved.
