Tinubu Stands Firm on New Tax Laws, Says Reforms Will Go Ahead Despite Public Concerns

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made it clear that his administration will move forward with the implementation of the newly signed tax laws, even as public debate continues around some of their provisions.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the President said the rollout would proceed as planned, noting that some of the laws have already taken effect from June 26, 2025, while others are scheduled to begin on January 1, 2026.

Tinubu described the reforms as a major opportunity to build a fairer, more competitive, and sustainable tax system for Nigeria. He stressed that the changes are not meant to increase the tax burden on citizens but to fix long-standing structural issues within the existing system.

According to the President, the new laws are designed to improve efficiency, streamline tax administration, protect the dignity of Nigerians, and rebuild trust between the government and the people. He acknowledged the ongoing discussions and concerns raised by members of the public but said none of the issues identified so far justify suspending or reversing the reforms.

He cautioned against making rushed decisions in response to public pressure, noting that trust in government policies is built through consistent and carefully thought-out actions over time.

Tinubu called on stakeholders to support the implementation process, saying the reform programme has now moved fully into the delivery phase. He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to due process and respect for laws that have been properly passed and signed.

The President assured Nigerians that the Federal Government would work closely with the National Assembly to address any challenges that may arise during implementation, adding that his administration remains focused on delivering a tax system that promotes fairness, growth, and shared responsibility.
