Rivers lawmakers return ₦100,000 sent to them by Governor Fubara

Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have sent back ₦100,000 that was paid into their personal bank accounts by Governor Sim Fubara.

The lawmakers said the money appeared in their accounts without prior notice or approval. In a statement released by Hon. Enemi Aabo George, who chairs the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, the Assembly explained that each member received a bank alert on December 30, 2025.

According to the statement, the transfer was made on the governor’s instructions, but the lawmakers described it as unsolicited and unauthorised. Once they realised where the money came from, they said they acted quickly and returned the funds to the Rivers State Government’s account.

The Assembly stressed that all government spending must follow due process and receive legislative approval, as required by the Constitution. They also accused Governor Fubara of repeatedly withdrawing money from the state’s Consolidated Revenue Account without approval since taking office in 2025, despite warnings, Supreme Court rulings, and constitutional provisions on separation of powers.

This latest development comes as tensions continue to rise between Governor Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
