The Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its unwavering support for the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, warning against any attempt to recognize breakaway regions within the country.
Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, made this known in a statement in which he urged all regional and international actors to respect Somalia’s sovereignty by recognizing its federal government as the only legitimate authority.
Tuggar said the Nigerian government strongly condemns any actions that undermine Somalia’s unity, cautioning that recognizing any part of Somalia as an independent entity could escalate tensions and further destabilize the region.
He commended the Somali government for its continued efforts to achieve peace, security and national reconciliation despite significant political and security challenges confronting the country.
According to the minister, Nigeria believes that Somalia’s stability is critical to peace and security across the Horn of Africa and the wider African continent.
Tuggar therefore reaffirmed Nigeria’s resolve to continue supporting Somalia, in line with the positions of the United Nations and the African Union, towards rebuilding a stable, prosperous and resilient nation.
