The Super Eagles of Nigeria will kick off their quest for a fourth Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title with a Group C clash against Tanzania — a fixture that has not been played since 1980.
Nigeria head into the tournament seeking redemption on multiple fronts. Eric Chelle’s side finished as runners-up at the last AFCON, surrendering a first-half lead as hosts Côte d’Ivoire came from behind to secure a 2–1 victory in the final.
The disappointment was compounded by a turbulent FIFA 2026 World Cup qualification campaign. After a series of draws and defeats, Nigeria only progressed through revised CAF ranking rules for the best second-placed teams, needed extra time to edge Gabon, and ultimately bowed out after a penalty shootout loss to DR Congo — ending their World Cup hopes.
While the Super Eagles appear clear favourites on paper against Tanzania, caution is still required. Nigeria were recently edged by Egypt in a build-up friendly, a result that highlighted lingering vulnerabilities.
Tanzania, known as the Taifa Stars, are making their fifth AFCON appearance but have exited at the group stage in each of their previous four outings. They will be eager to make a stronger impression this time, especially as they prepare to co-host the next AFCON edition alongside Uganda and Kenya.
However, form is not on their side. Tanzania are winless in their last seven matches, recording two draws and five losses, including a World Cup qualifying defeat to Zambia. They also suffered a 4–3 loss to Kuwait in a recent international friendly.
Nigeria boast a formidable squad featuring the likes of Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Alex Iwobi, making the contest appear one-sided. Nonetheless, Tanzania will look to Simon Msuva and Feisal Salum for inspiration as they attempt to trouble the Nigerian defence.
