Insecurity: Nigerian Army suspends retirement of over 800 officers

The Nigerian Army has put an immediate stop to both statutory and voluntary retirements as part of urgent steps to tackle mounting security challenges across the country.

A reliable source at the Army Headquarters in Abuja told Tribune Online on Sunday that the order was issued through a memo signed by the Military Secretary on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu.

The memo explained that the suspension is aimed at retaining skilled officers, increasing manpower, and strengthening operations as the Armed Forces undergo expansion in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s nationwide security emergency declared on November 26.

Normally, officers retire based on age limits, a maximum of 35 years in service, and other standard rules under the Harmonised Terms and Conditions of Service (Officers) 2024. However, the document’s Chapter 3.10(e) permits service extensions when necessary for military interests.

With the ongoing security emergency and directive to expand security agencies, the Army said it must temporarily halt all retirements. The suspension affects officers who have:

Failed promotion exams three times

Been passed over for promotion three times

Reached the age limit for their rank

Failed conversion boards three times

Completed 35 years of service

The memo notes that such officers may choose to apply to remain in service beyond their scheduled retirement date, while those unwilling to stay must follow standard retirement procedures.

Officers who accept the extension will not be eligible for promotions, career courses, special appointments, or deployments.

Commanders have been instructed to communicate the directive and manage any morale issues, with a review expected once the security situation improves.

The Army emphasised that the Harmonised Terms and Conditions of Service (Officers) 2024 provides the legal backing for the temporary suspension.
