Four members of a family lost their lives in the early hours of Wednesday after a fire swept through their home at Kundila Layin Baba Impossible in Tarauni Local Government Area of Kano State.
The spokesperson for the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi, confirmed the incident in a statement, noting that the fire was reported at about 4:13 a.m. by one of the agency’s personnel, Abba Datti.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the ground-floor residence — measuring approximately 40 by 30 feet — already engulfed in flames. The fire destroyed two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen and a toilet.
According to the statement, five people were trapped inside the burning building:
Shodandi, 43 (father)
Rafi’a, 30 (mother)
Mardiya, 3
Yusira, 1½
All four were burnt to death before rescue teams could reach them.
However, a 12-year-old boy, Aminu Shodandi, was rescued alive by firefighters.
The Fire Service extended condolences to the bereaved family and urged residents to be extremely cautious with fire-related materials, especially during the harmattan season when fire outbreaks are more common.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the inferno was caused by a mosquito coil the family lit before going to sleep.
