Former Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, has died in London at the age of 70. According to family and hospital sources, he passed away following a battle with severe heart failure and complications associated with urinary cancer. The former banker‑turned‑politician had been receiving intensive care in the United Kingdom where his condition reportedly worsened after months of declining health.
Obiano served as Governor of Nigeria’s Anambra State from 17 March 2014 until 17 March 2022 under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). His eight‑year administration oversaw infrastructure projects and economic initiatives though it attracted scrutiny over public‑fund management. Prior to his political career he held senior positions in the banking sector and completed an accountancy degree at the University of Lagos.
On the legal front, Obiano faced trial for alleged money‑laundering involving an amount of about ₦4 billion, scheduled to appear before the Federal High Court in Abuja. His death comes as the case was still pending.
The news of his passing has generated tributes across Anambra State and Nigeria’s political spectrum. Details of his funeral arrangements and official statement from the government are awaited. Obiano leaves behind his wife, Ebele Obiano, and a wide circle of political and business associates.
