PDP Crisis: 3,000 Delegates Head to Ibadan for Fierce Convention

Tension has gripped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as over 3,000 delegates prepare to storm Ibadan, Oyo State, for its high-stakes national convention slated for November 15 and 16.

The convention has deepened the power struggle between the camp of Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, backed by PDP governors and the Board of Trustees, and the faction loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, which has elected its own rival chairman.

Despite a Federal High Court order halting the national convention, the Damagum-led group obtained a counter order from an Oyo State court permitting it to proceed.

Party insiders say more than 3,000 “super and elected delegates” are expected, insisting the convention remains valid under the latest court ruling.

While Damagum’s camp pushes ahead with preparations, the Wike-backed bloc vows to resist the move, warning that the event could worsen the PDP’s lingering crisis.

Reconciliation meetings are ongoing, with party leaders expected to take a final decision before Wednesday.
