Trump Doesn’t Rule Out Third Term, Rejects VP “Loophole”

US President Donald Trump has hinted he might seek a third term in office, saying he would “love to do it,” though he dismissed suggestions that he could return via a vice-presidential run in 2028.

Speaking to reporters during his Asia tour, Trump called the idea of becoming vice-president “too cute” and said it “wouldn’t be right.” He added, “I think people wouldn’t like that.”

While unclear on how he could legally pursue another term, Trump said he hadn’t given it serious thought but noted, “I have the best poll numbers I’ve ever had.”

The 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution limits presidents to two terms. Repealing it would require approval from two-thirds of Congress and ratification by 38 states—an outcome seen as improbable.

Trump’s former strategist Steve Bannon recently told The Economist that a “plan” was in motion to secure Trump a third term, insisting, “Trump is going to be president in ’28.”

During his remarks aboard Air Force One en route to Japan, Trump named Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as strong potential successors, describing them as “unstoppable.”

The Democratic field for 2028 remains uncertain. California Governor Gavin Newsom recently admitted he is seriously considering a presidential run, while former Vice President Kamala Harris said she may “possibly” seek the presidency again.
