Court Sends Nnamdi Kanu’s Brother and Lawyer to Kuje Prison Over #FreeNnamdiKanuNow Protest

A magistrate court in Kuje, Abuja, has ordered the detention of Prince Emmanuel Kanu, brother of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, and his lawyer, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, in Kuje Correctional Centre.

Their remand followed their involvement in the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest held on Monday in Abuja.

In a post on social media, Kanuta Kanu claimed the decision was part of a wider conspiracy by the executive, legislature, and judiciary to obstruct Nnamdi Kanu’s upcoming court hearing scheduled for Thursday.

Earlier, the police had arraigned Ejimakor, Emmanuel Kanu, and ten others before the court for their alleged roles in the protest. Professor Chidi Odinkalu, former National Chairman of the Human Rights Commission of Nigeria, shared the court documents online on Tuesday.

According to the charges, the defendants were accused of inciting disturbance, breaching public peace, and disobeying a court order. The police alleged that the protesters obstructed traffic, denied citizens free movement, and chanted war songs while demanding Nnamdi Kanu’s release.

Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin had disclosed on Channels Television’s Politics Today that Ejimakor, Kanu’s brother, and others arrested during the protest would face charges after the completion of investigations.
