Nigeria has lost one of its most remarkable canine companions, as Mayoress, believed to be the country’s oldest German Shepherd, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2025, at the age of 13.
Mayoress, owned by Faith Esco, was purchased in March 2012 and quickly became a beloved member of her family. Known for its calm, disciplined and affectionate nature, the dog stood out for its intelligence and loyalty—traits that made German Shepherds popular worldwide.
Faith Esco announced the passing in an emotional tribute on social media, describing Mayoress as “a beautiful, well-behaved and peaceful creature.”
Mayoress reportedly lived a healthy life until old age complications set in. Pet lovers across Nigeria have joined in expressing condolences and celebrating the life of the late canine.
