The US government is investigating Tesla after reports that its self-driving cars broke traffic laws, including driving on the wrong side of the road and running red lights. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said it had received 58 such reports, covering about 2.9 million vehicles with Full Self-Driving technology. The probe will assess how often and how severely these issues occur.
Six crashes were linked to the cars moving off before traffic lights turned green, with four causing injuries. Tesla is also under a separate investigation into faulty door locks that allegedly trapped children inside Model Y vehicles. The company recently launched cheaper models as competition from Chinese electric carmakers intensifies.
