BREAKING: Yakubu Resigns as INEC Chairman

…Agbamuche-Mbu Takes Over in Acting Capacity

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has stepped down from his position, signaling the start of a leadership transition within the electoral body.

Yakubu, who began his second five-year term on December 9, 2020, announced his resignation on Tuesday during a meeting with the commission’s Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs).

Following his exit, Barrister May Agbamuche-Mbu, one of INEC’s National Commissioners, has assumed office as Acting Chairman pending the appointment of a substantive head by the President.

Agbamuche-Mbu, representing the South, currently oversees the commission’s Legal Services, Clearance and Complaints Committee (LSCCC).

Yakubu’s resignation aligns with constitutional term limits, having earlier completed his first tenure in November 2020 before being reappointed and confirmed for a second term.

In a heartfelt farewell address, Yakubu expressed gratitude to INEC staff and RECs for their dedication and support during his years of service.
