The Nigerian media industry has been plunged into mourning following the tragic death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a news anchor, reporter, and producer with ARISE News Channel, who was killed during an armed robbery at her residence in Katampe, Abuja.
Maduagwu, fondly known as “Sommie” among colleagues, was attacked in the early hours of Monday. She was just 29 years old.
In a statement confirming the incident, ARISE News described her as “a cherished member of the ARISE News family,” noting that her voice and presence “engaged and connected deeply with viewers.”
“Sommie’s voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion, and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We call for a speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of the culprits,” the statement read.
The Nigeria Police Force has since launched an investigation into the attack, with assurances that those behind the crime will be brought to justice.
Born on December 26, 1995, Maduagwu was a trained lawyer who transitioned into broadcast journalism, where she quickly rose to prominence. She earned admiration for her professionalism, warmth, and vibrant on-screen personality, leaving a lasting impression on both colleagues and viewers.
Her colleagues and management have extended heartfelt condolences to her family, describing her passing as a devastating loss not only to ARISE News but also to Nigeria’s wider media community.
