Military Neutralises Bandits in Plateau and Benue, Recovers Weapons

The Nigerian military has recorded fresh successes in the fight against banditry, killing several criminals and recovering arms in separate operations across Plateau and Benue States.

In Plateau, troops of the 3 Division/Joint Task Force Operation Enduring Peace (JTF OPEP) launched an intelligence-driven ambush on September 16 in Odare Forest, Dutsen Zaki, Wase Local Government Area.

Spokesman for the task force, Major Samson Zhakom, said troops engaged bandits riding motorcycles into the forest, killing one while others escaped with gunshot wounds. Items recovered at the scene include a motorcycle, two mobile phones, a machete, and charms.

He added that on September 15, troops acting on credible intelligence intercepted bandits at crossing points around Garga, Showaka, Yuli, and Kukawa villages in Wase and Kanam LGAs. The bandits were overpowered through “superior firepower and professionalism,” with troops recovering a G3 rifle, a magazine, and three rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.

According to him, the onslaught is part of the JTF’s mandate to deny bandits freedom of movement and ensure they are neutralised.

In Benue State, troops of the Defence Special Operations Force under Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) neutralised a criminal at Afia Market in Ukum LGA on Tuesday.

Acting Media Information Officer, Lt. Ahmad Zubairu, said soldiers recovered one AK-47 rifle, a magazine, and three rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.

In another operation, troops deployed at Ayilamo outpost in Logo LGA repelled armed herders who opened fire at Tse Anema village on Monday. The soldiers later pursued herders spotted in Azege village, where cattle had ravaged farmlands. Two suspects uprooting yams fled on sighting the troops, who also discovered destroyed soybean farms.

Lt. Zubairu noted that OPWS has intensified patrols in the area to prevent further attacks and protect farmers.

Force Commander, Maj. Gen. Moses Gara, commended the troops for their swift response and urged them to recover more weapons to forestall future attacks. He reaffirmed OPWS’ commitment to safeguarding communities across Benue, Taraba, and Nasarawa States.

Hobnob News reports that the latest military offensives highlight ongoing efforts to restore security in the North Central region.
