Former Chelsea winger Joe Cole has issued a strong warning to the club’s latest signing, Alejandro Garnacho, stressing that the Argentine must “knuckle down” if he is to succeed at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues officially unveiled Garnacho as their new player on Saturday following his move from Manchester United. The 20-year-old winger, who has already made a name for himself at Old Trafford, now faces a fresh challenge under Chelsea’s head coach, Enzo Maresca.
Speaking on TNT Sport, Cole praised Chelsea’s business but cautioned that Garnacho must brace for intense competition in his preferred position.
“He’s going to be competing with Gittens, you would imagine, for that left-wing role and coming in on his right foot,” Cole noted. “I think it is a good price for Chelsea. If he wants to knuckle down and become a top player that he can become, he needs to come to a good environment, which I think Chelsea is, and grow from there. But there are lots of competition for those wide positions.”
The Argentina international will also link up with his compatriot and Chelsea midfielder, Enzo Fernandez, at Stamford Bridge.
With Garnacho’s arrival, Chelsea fans will be eager to see whether he can establish himself as a key figure in Maresca’s project despite the battle for wide attacking roles.
