The Federal Government has clarified that it never signed any agreements with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), contrary to the union’s longstanding claims.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, made this disclosure on Thursday while briefing journalists in Abuja. He explained that the documents frequently referenced by ASUU, including those from 2009 and 2011, were only proposals tabled during negotiations and not binding agreements.
“The documents ASUU has been referring to as agreements were just proposals that were never signed,” Alausa said.
The minister stressed that despite this clarification, President Bola Tinubu’s administration remained committed to addressing the lingering issues between the government and the lecturers’ union.
He further dismissed reports suggesting that he had scheduled a joint meeting with ASUU and the Minister of Labour and Employment, describing them as inaccurate.
