Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd.), has expressed deep concern over the increasing rate of criminal activities in Nigeria, particularly among the youth.
Gowon, who is the convener of Nigeria Prays, made the call during a one-day national prayer rally organised by the South-West Zone of the initiative in Osogbo on Sunday.
The elder statesman, who addressed participants virtually, urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in prayers for the nation’s peace, security, and leadership.
“Let us bring before God Nigeria’s problems and challenges, especially the general kidnapping, murder, banditry, political and socioeconomic problems, religious and many others,” Gowon said.
He described the rise in criminality, insurgency, and banditry across the country as worrisome, stressing that urgent divine intervention was needed to heal the nation.
“We decry the rising rate of crimes among our youths and citizens. Lord, have mercy on us. Heal us individually and collectively,” he prayed.
Gowon also interceded for Nigeria’s leaders at all levels, urging God’s guidance and protection for President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, governors, legislators, members of the judiciary, and traditional rulers.
The former Head of State, who established Nigeria Prays in 1996 as a national interdenominational prayer platform, emphasized the importance of continued supplication for unity, peace, and progress in the country.
Speaking at the event, the Osun State Coordinator of Nigeria Prays, Rev. Mike Adebomi, lauded the massive turnout and urged Nigerians to intensify prayers against the nation’s challenges.
