The Nigerian Army has announced plans to establish a Special Forces School in Nasarawa State as part of efforts to enhance specialised military training and address evolving security challenges across the country.
Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, disclosed the development during an official visit to Lafia on Friday, where he met with Governor Abdullahi Sule, as well as members of the state’s executive and security councils.
According to Oluyede, the facility will be located within the premises of the Special Forces Command in Nasarawa and will serve as a hub for advanced tactical training.
“This school will serve as a vital training hub for specialised operations, enhancing our capacity to address emerging security challenges. It will also add strategic value to the state and the nation at large,” he stated.
The Army chief commended the Nasarawa State Government for its continued support to the military, highlighting the role of community cooperation, traditional institutions, and government collaboration in sustaining peace.
Oluyede stressed that the Nigerian Army belongs to all Nigerians, being drawn from every state, and called for stronger partnerships between security agencies and the public.
“Security is not the responsibility of the armed forces alone. It is a collective duty that requires partnership, trust, and active support from the public,” he said.
Governor Sule Welcomes Initiative
Governor Abdullahi Sule described the planned Special Forces School as a strategic boost to the state’s security architecture and a driver of socio-economic development.
He commended the Special Forces Command and Operation Whirl Stroke for their role in keeping Nasarawa stable despite unrest in neighbouring states, stressing that peace remained the foundation for the state’s agricultural and industrial growth.
The governor also praised the synergy among security agencies in Nasarawa, attributing it to intelligence sharing and teamwork without rivalry, and pledged continued government support for the Nigerian Army.
The Special Forces School is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s counter-terrorism, anti-banditry, and rapid response capabilities, positioning Nasarawa as a key player in the country’s security framework.
