Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has announced the suspension of a planned nationwide shutdown of the aviation sector that was scheduled to begin on Monday.
Keyamo, in a statement released via his official account on Sunday, said the decision followed successful talks with aviation workers’ unions, including the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUCPTRE).
The unions had, in a joint statement dated August 8, 2025, declared their intention to withdraw services to press for improved remuneration and welfare packages.
According to Hobnob News, Keyamo confirmed that the unions have now agreed to suspend the action and engage in dialogue with the government.
“We are happy to announce that, after our intervention, the planned strike by the aviation unions due to commence tomorrow has been shelved,” he said. “Given my long relationship with labour unions, I have continued to work with our comrades to find lasting solutions to issues that have been pending in the sector long before we came to office. By showing absolute good faith, the issues will be resolved one by one.”
The minister assured stakeholders that the government remains committed to addressing the workers’ demands in a structured and progressive manner to avoid disruptions in the sector.
