First Lady Donates ₦1bn, Relief Items to Niger Flood Victims, Launches Women Empowerment Programme

In a powerful show of solidarity and compassion, Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has donated ₦1 billion, 2,000 bags of 50kg rice, footwear, and other relief materials to victims of the recent Mokwa flood disaster and other tragedies across Niger State.

During a symbolic presentation held in Minna on Tuesday, Mrs. Tinubu said her visit was to condole with the government and people of the state over the loss of lives and widespread displacement caused by the flood.

“As a mother, I share in your pain and grief,” the First Lady stated. “I believe we all can overcome this tragedy together. The strength of a nation lies in its compassion, and in moments like this, we must be our brothers’ keepers.”

She also acknowledged President Bola Tinubu’s swift intervention, particularly his directive for the immediate distribution of relief materials and the reconstruction of affected homes in the disaster-hit areas.

Economic Empowerment for 500 Women

Mrs. Tinubu also revealed that the Renewed Hope Initiative, in collaboration with the Tony Elumelu Foundation, has approved an economic empowerment programme to benefit 500 women in Niger State.

The initiative, she said, is part of a broader mission to uplift vulnerable Nigerians, especially women and youth, and promote self-reliance through strategic support.

Government Reacts

In his remarks, Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State expressed deep appreciation for the First Lady’s visit and support. He highlighted the state’s vulnerability to natural disasters due to its unique riverine geography, being bordered by both the River Niger and Kaduna River.

“The empathy and compassion you’ve shown reflect the quality of leadership we have in the country. Your visit and donations have restored hope to many,” the governor said.

Governor Bago confirmed that the state received the ₦1 billion relief fund, alongside 2,000 bags of rice, 16,000 wrappers, and over 100 pairs of shoes for victims in dire need.

A Testament of Compassion

The Secretary to the Niger State Government, Alhaji Abubakar Usman, described the First Lady’s visit as a clear display of genuine compassion and commitment to the welfare of Nigerians, particularly the most vulnerable.

“This humanitarian outreach delivers not only material aid but also emotional strength,” Usman added.

Accompanying Delegation

The First Lady was joined by Mrs. Salamatu Gbajabiamila (wife of the Chief of Staff to the President), wives of state governors, and wives of service chiefs, reinforcing the gravity and collaborative spirit behind the intervention.

Tragedy in Numbers

The Mokwa flood, which struck on May 29, left a trail of destruction:

153 lives lost

3,018 individuals affected

11 persons injured

593 households displaced

Other disasters in the state include fire outbreaks and boat mishaps, further underscoring the need for continued emergency response and sustainable preventive measures.
