Nigeria’s women’s basketball sensation, Amy Okonkwo, has been crowned the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket, following a stellar performance that powered D’Tigress to yet another continental triumph.
The 28-year-old forward was instrumental in Nigeria’s dominant run through the tournament, culminating in a 78-64 victory over Mali in Sunday night’s final held at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
With this latest win, Nigeria’s D’Tigress secured their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title and their seventh overall, further cementing their status as the undisputed queens of African women’s basketball.
Okonkwo’s MVP honour adds another feather to her cap, as she becomes only the second Nigerian player in history to win the MVP award back-to-back, following in the footsteps of Mfon Udoka, who achieved the feat in 2003 and 2005.
Hobnob News recalls that Okonkwo also claimed the MVP title at the 2023 edition of the tournament hosted in Rwanda, underscoring her consistency and dominance on the African stage.
Led by head coach Rena Wakama, D’Tigress showcased tactical discipline and athletic brilliance throughout the competition, with Okonkwo emerging as the heartbeat of the team — combining scoring efficiency, rebounding prowess, and leadership on and off the court.
Her latest accolade further solidifies her place among the elite figures in African women’s basketball.
