The Katsina State House of Assembly has expressed deep concern over the increasing wave of bandit attacks across several communities in the state, calling on the Federal Government to take swift and decisive action to curb the growing insecurity.
The call was made during a plenary session on Wednesday, presided over by the Speaker, Alhaji Nasir Yahaya-Daura.
Raising a motion of urgent public importance, the member representing Dutsinma Constituency and Chairman of the House Committee on Security, Alhaji Muhammad Abubakar-Khamis, painted a grim picture of the deteriorating security situation in his constituency.
“The attacks in these areas are increasing daily. Bandits recently killed residents, security operatives, and abducted others. The people are living in fear,” Abubakar-Khamis told the Assembly.
He specifically called for the immediate deployment of more military and security personnel to crisis-prone areas, including Makera, Gammo, Karofi, and Dabawa wards in Dutsinma Local Government Area.
While acknowledging the efforts of the Katsina State Government in combating the crisis, the lawmaker emphasized that the situation had escalated beyond the capacity of the state alone and requires urgent federal support.
Other lawmakers who contributed to the motion echoed similar sentiments, urging a thorough review of the current security strategy and the implementation of more proactive measures to safeguard lives and property.
At the end of deliberations, the Assembly unanimously adopted the motion and resolved to forward its recommendations to the executive arm for immediate action.
Katsina, one of the North-Western states worst hit by banditry, has continued to experience recurring attacks on rural communities, resulting in loss of lives, destruction of property, and mass displacement of residents.
