A Magistrate Court in Normansland, Kano, has convicted two men—Salihu Mukhtar and an accomplice—for conspiracy and illegal tree felling in violation of the state’s environmental protection laws.
The Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change disclosed that the duo was found guilty of cutting down a tree without authorisation along Jigawa Road in the Nasarawa Government Reserved Area (GRA).
Led by Barrister Bahijjah Aliyu, the prosecution presented evidence proving that the defendants conspired to commit the offence, contravening provisions of the Kano State Penal Code and Forestry Laws.
Presiding Magistrate Auwalu Yusuf found them guilty and issued the following sentences:
Conspiracy: Three months in prison or a fine of ₦20,000 each.
Illegal tree felling: Six months in prison or a fine of ₦50,000 each.
In reaction, Kano State’s Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru Hashim, reaffirmed the government’s zero-tolerance stance on illegal logging and called on the public to report environmental violations.
“Trees are not just for beauty—they sustain our climate, our air, and our future,” Dr. Hashim said. “This conviction should serve as a warning: anyone who damages our environment will be held accountable.”
