President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Sunday, paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, describing him as not just a revered monarch but a father figure and staunch believer in democracy.
Speaking at the 8th day Fidau prayers held in honour of the late royal father at the Dipo Dina International Stadium in Ijebu Ode, President Tinubu disclosed that Oba Adetona played a crucial role in his emergence as President of Nigeria, a gesture he said he would remain eternally grateful for.
“Our history would not have been complete if I had failed in the last election,” Tinubu said. “This is basically because of the support and prayers of the late Awujale. But today, he is no more. Baba was steadfast, resolute, and encouraging to the cause of June 12 and democracy. The Awujale was a leader of conscience and tradition.”
Tinubu, who landed at the Ogun State Agro Cargo Airport in Ikenne around 12:45 p.m., proceeded to the private residence of the late monarch in Igbeba, where he paid his final respects at the gravesite.
According to Hobnob News, Oba Sikiru Adetona died last week at the age of 91, drawing the curtain on a reign widely regarded as one of the most impactful in modern Yoruba history.
The President noted that several institutions have been named after the late monarch, emphasizing that his legacy of integrity, courage, and service would endure for generations.
In his remarks, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, urged the people of Ijebuland to remain united and continue to uphold the values of peace and harmony that Oba Adetona championed throughout his reign.
“Let us honour his legacy by acting with honour, dignity, and selfless leadership,” the governor said.
Delivering a sermon, Chief Imam of Gbagura, Kamaldeen Bello, reminded attendees of life’s fleeting nature, stating, “We will all taste death, so live as though today is your last.”
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including the Governors of Kwara, Ondo, and Ekiti States, as well as Deputy Governors of Oyo and Lagos States, alongside federal ministers and traditional leaders.
Oba Sikiru Adetona, one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning monarchs, ascended the throne in 1960 and was revered for his outspokenness, wisdom, and dedication to the welfare of his people and the principles of democracy.
